Six associations representing e-hailing and p-hailing workers have rejected the Gig Workers Bill 2025, warning it could become the “grave” of gig workers. They argued the proposed law unfairly burdens workers with mandatory Socso contributions while primarily benefiting large companies, potentially squeezing out smaller platforms and reducing competition. The groups said the rushed legislation risks harming the very workers it aims to protect. In contrast, major trade unions, including the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), Cuepacs and the Malaysia e-hailing Alliance (Gem), have welcomed the bill, describing it as a progressive step forward in safeguarding worker rights.
