The United States will impose 50% tariffs on Indian imports starting August 27, 2025, under a Homeland Security notice. The move follows President Donald Trump’s executive order earlier this month, which added a 25% duty on top of existing tariffs in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

Washington argues the measure is needed to weaken Moscow’s war financing. Exemptions include passenger vehicles, iron and steel, copper, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. India has rejected the allegations as “unfair and unjustified,” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowing to protect farmers, small businesses, and national interests despite mounting U.S. pressure.
