Urban Renewal Bill Debate Deferred to October After Strong Opposition

Debates on the contentious Urban Renewal Bill 2025 have been postponed to the next Dewan Rakyat sitting in October, following pushback from both opposition MPs and several government lawmakers, including Barisan Nasional and seven PKR representatives. 

Urban Renewal Bill Debate Deferred to October After Strong Opposition

BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan confirmed the coalition’s 30 MPs requested a review to ensure wider stakeholder engagement. PAS’s Ahmad Fadhli Shaari hailed the delay as a “victory for the people”. 

While the bill will still be tabled for its second reading, debates and voting are deferred. The proposed law aims to modernise redevelopment rules but faces criticism over lowered consent thresholds that may weaken minority residents’ rights.
