The High Court has dismissed Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff’s bid to delay payment of RM480,000 to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh over a defamation case.
Bankruptcy Looms as UUM Lecturer Fails to Pay RM480,000 to Hannah Yeoh
Judicial commissioner Avinder Singh Gill ruled there were no special circumstances to justify a stay, ordering Kamarul to proceed with payment and imposing RM2,500 in costs.
The judgment stems from defamatory Facebook posts made in 2017, for which Kamarul was ordered to pay RM400,000 in damages and RM80,000 in legal costs. Yeoh has since initiated bankruptcy proceedings after repeated demands for payment were ignored. Kamarul’s appeal remains pending.
