The US has suspended tariff exemptions for delivery packages valued under $800, ending a long-standing “de minimis” loophole that let over a billion parcels enter duty-free last year.

The policy change, effective Friday, introduces a six-month transition with flat tariffs of $80–$200 per item before shifting to a 10–40% tariff rate for most countries. More than 30 nations, including Germany, Japan, and Australia, have already suspended shipments to the US pending clarity on customs procedures.
Logistics firms like DHL also halted services, citing unresolved questions. The White House says the move targets narcotics smuggling and reduces the trade deficit.
