KUALA LUMPUR — Transport Minister Anthony Loke defended the government’s push for the controversial URA bill, saying the regime is only upholding PM Anwar Ibrahim’s plans to uplift poor Malaysians through redevelopment. But the bill faced backlash in Parliament from BN deputy chairperson Mohamad Hasan called for a review saying BN lawmakers would want a 100% approval rate from residents instead of the current 70% in the bill. The bill was also criticised by several PKR lawmakers who raised objections over the bill’s consent threshold for property owners. Protests were also staged outside Parliament by residents and NGOs. Meanwhile, Loke also said private developers will find it easier to redevelop such areas and the rights of residents and owners are guaranteed.
