Indonesia is facing its worst unrest since President Prabowo Subianto took office, after six people were killed in protests over economic hardship and lawmakers’ financial perks. Demonstrations that began peacefully turned violent after footage showed police running over a 21-year-old delivery driver in Jakarta.

Protests have since spread to major cities including Yogyakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, and Medan. Authorities have deployed armoured vehicles and set up checkpoints in the capital, while warning of firm action against “rioters and looters.” Prabowo cancelled a planned China trip, as TikTok suspended live streaming in Indonesia amid escalating tensions across the country.
