KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — Foreigners are marrying Malaysians to legally conduct business in the country, exploiting provisions under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956, the Dewan Negara was told. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Deputy Minister Dr Fuziah Salleh said while only citizens and permanent residents can register sole proprietorships or partnerships, some foreigners use their spouses’ names to operate. Local traders have raised concerns about unfair competition, though registrations remain legal. Suggestions include restricting business rights for foreign spouses to after five years of marriage. Enforcement is carried out with Immigration and local authorities.

“Perhaps we can discuss how this poses a threat to other (local) traders,” she said…
