Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has urged ASEAN nations to intensify efforts and show stronger political will in fully enforcing the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution. Despite being the world’s first regional environmental treaty, he said its implementation remains weak and inconsistent, even as climate change worsens conditions with hotter temperatures and longer dry spells.

Lee stressed that haze is no longer just an environmental issue but a serious health, economic, and security concern. He called for strict anti-burning laws, accountability for offenders, greater transparency, early hotspot detection, and integration of haze prevention into broader climate strategies.
