The Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) has urged Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming to reinstate local government elections, stressing they are essential for accountability, transparency, and public participation. Perak PSM member K Kunasekaran said while the proposed Urban Renewal Act (URA) can proceed, citizens must have the “third vote” to hold local councils accountable for decisions on waste management, safety, parking, and urban development. He dismissed claims that local polls would spark political conflict, pointing out that federal and state elections function peacefully under multi-party control. PSM argued that local elections would restore meaningful grassroots democracy.
