Indonesian student groups met with two senior ministers on Thursday (Sept 4) to press demands after more than a week of protests against lawmakers’ housing allowances and police violence.
Indonesian Student Groups Meet Ministers Amid Deadly Protests
Demonstrations spread nationwide after a police vehicle killed a motorcycle taxi driver, fueling anger. While students had sought a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto, no concrete concessions were announced. Rights groups say 10 people have died and over 1,000 injured, while authorities detained more than 3,000 people.
Some student leaders criticised the meetings as “political symbolism.” Police have dismissed and demoted officers linked to the driver’s death, with possible criminal charges pending.
