Rising private healthcare costs are pushing more affluent Malaysians, including Tan Sris and VIPs, to seek treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL). Its director, Datuk Dr Harikrishna K.R. Nair, said many were referred from private hospitals once insurance coverage ran out or fees became unmanageable.

The trend, visible over the past decade, also reflects growing trust in HKL’s specialists and advanced facilities. With 417 specialists and cutting-edge services such as robotic-assisted surgery, HKL treats up to two million patients annually. Dr Harikrishna stressed that regardless of status, all patients are treated equally, while low-income groups remain the hospital’s priority.
