U.S. consumer prices rose 2.9% in August, up from 2.7% in July, amid President Donald Trump’s tariff policy and rising housing and food costs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Housing and Food Drive Inflation Higher Amid Trump’s Tariff Push
Prices climbed 0.4% month-on-month, the largest increase since December, with housing up 0.4%, food 0.5%, and energy 0.7%. Egg prices remained flat but stayed 11% higher than last year, while coffee surged 20%.
The inflation data complicates the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision, as policymakers weigh rate cuts against the risk of fueling inflation. Meanwhile, Trump’s firing of BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer has raised concerns over political interference.
