Retail Trade Leads as Tourism Powers 15% of Malaysia’s GDP in 2024

Malaysia’s tourism industry contributed RM291.9 billion, or 15.1% of the national economy, in 2024, according to the Department of Statistics. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the sector grew 7.4%, slightly slower than 2023’s 10.9% expansion.

Retail trade dominated with RM154.5 billion, followed by food and beverage at RM47.7 billion, and other services at RM39 billion, together making up 82.5% of performance. Inbound tourism surged 41.1% to RM107 billion, led by shopping and accommodation, while domestic tourism rose 25.1% to RM98.4 billion. All sub-sectors surpassed pre-pandemic levels except accommodation and passenger transport.
