KUALA LUMPUR: Penang’s George Town has been crowned the best street food city in Asia by international travel and hospitality guide Time Out. The ranking, published on Sept 8, placed Penang at the top, celebrating the island’s rich culinary heritage shaped by Malay, Chinese, Peranakan and Indian influences.
Writer Katie Lockhart praised George Town as a paradise where one could “happily eat street food for life,” highlighting must-try dishes such as char kuey teow, assam laksa, roti canai and Hokkien mee.

Time Out noted that street food in Penang sparks debate, with locals offering endless opinions on the best stalls. Other cities on the list include Hanoi, Singapore, Mumbai, Chiang Mai, Tainan, Osaka, Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Chengdu, each recognised for their vibrant food cultures.
