PETALING JAYA – PAS’ call for a prime ministerial candidate under 70 years old has been seen as a veiled push for Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin to step aside. The Bersatu president, 78, was recently announced as the party’s pick for prime minister if PN wins the 16th general election.
Step aside Muhyiddin
However, PAS has hinted at preferring alternatives such as Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin or even its own leaders like Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. Observers say the move could strain ties between PAS and Bersatu, as PAS feels Bersatu has dominated PN, including on the prime minister issue. PN’s supreme council is expected to deliberate on its candidate for the top post next week.
