The United States will lower tariffs on Japanese automobiles from 27.5% to 15% starting Tuesday, following a new trade agreement with Tokyo. The previous rate combined a 25% tariff imposed by President Donald Trump earlier this year with an existing 2.5% duty.
Tariffs slashed on Japanese cars
The reduction offers relief to Japanese automakers, who have faced mounting costs under Trump’s renewed tariff strategy since his return to office in January. The revised tariff structure applies retroactively to August 7 and is part of a broader deal that includes Japan’s commitment to invest US$550 billion in the U.S. economy.
