ERIE, Pa. – Former President Barack Obama has condemned the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, calling the killing “horrific” while warning Americans not to let political violence stifle democratic debate. Speaking before 8,000 people at the Jefferson Educational Society’s Global Summit XVII on Sept. 16, Obama stressed that violence against political figures, regardless of ideology, threatens democracy itself. He urged Americans to “extend grace” to Kirk’s family while continuing to challenge controversial ideas through open debate.
Ex-president urges unity, criticizes Trump on assassination
Without naming him directly, Obama criticized former President Donald Trump for using the tragedy to blame opponents and restrict discussion. He praised Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro for demonstrating civility despite partisan divides, contrasting their conduct with Trump’s rhetoric. Obama said democracy requires the ability to engage in “really contentious debate without resorting to violence,” warning that silencing critics after acts of violence is a dangerous mistake.
