Peru evacuated around 1,600 tourists from the train station serving Machu Picchu after local protests escalated into clashes with police.
Machu Picchu protest
Demonstrators blocked tracks with logs and rocks, demanding community representation in the bidding process for a new bus operator after a 30-year concession ended. Fourteen officers were injured during the unrest.
The Machu Picchu Defense Front insists the new operator should be locally owned. Among the stranded were tourists from France, Japan, the U.S., and Brazil. Authorities resumed evacuations and temporarily paused protests. Tourism, vital to Peru’s economy, continues to face disruption at the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site.
