A coalition of NGOs has launched a petition to rename Port Dickson to Pantai Dermaga, arguing that colonial-era names should no longer define Malaysia’s identity.
Petition to restore Port Dickson identity
Identiti chairman Islah Wahyudi Zainudin cited historical records showing the area was once a Malay village called Tanjung Kemuning before being renamed by British Governor Dickson in 1889. He called the continued use of colonial names a betrayal of national heritage and a violation of language laws.
The NGOs referenced past renaming efforts like Jesselton to Kota Kinabalu. Negeri Sembilan’s Menteri Besar responded by questioning the selective focus on Port Dickson amid broader naming debates.
