KUALA LUMPUR | About 200,000 Malaysians flocked to southern Thailand during the Malaysia Day weekend, spending nearly RM50 million on shopping, food, transport and leisure. Hatyai was the top destination, alongside Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and Songkhla, with hotel bookings surpassing 120,000 and occupancy rates reaching up to 95%. According to the Association of Halal Trade and Tourism Thailand-Southeast Asia (Tahta), each tourist spent an average of RM522 over three days, underscoring the economic boost Malaysian visitors bring to the region.
Tourism, hotels, border trade
Tour operator Ramli Ibrahim from Pattani said all 3,000 vans in the southern provinces were fully booked from Sept 13 to 16. Local restaurateur Suraya Harun, popularly known as Kak Ya, noted that Malaysian visitors are vital to sustaining border trade and strengthening Thailand’s economy, especially in the southern provinces.
