KUALA LUMPUR: The redevelopment controversy in Kampung Sungai Baru should serve as a warning for the government before tabling the Urban Renewal Bill (URA), said Titiwangsa MP and Minister Johari Abdul Ghani. He cautioned that rushing the legislation could create long-term problems, especially as renewal projects often carry significant commercial value.
Johari urges clear safeguards and credible developers
Johari stressed that developers involved must be credible and financially stable to avoid failed projects that could leave displaced residents in limbo. He added that rules must be clear and embedded in the law itself, not introduced later. Citing misuse of the Land Acquisition Act, he urged that it be separated from urban renewal matters, warning that redevelopment must never turn homeowners into squatters.
