GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has gazetted amendments to town boundaries and established 25 new towns under the National Land Code, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced. Published in the state gazette on Sept 4, the move also expands the boundaries of 10 existing towns, affecting more than 210,000 land titles and 184,000 strata titles statewide.
So many New Towns
Chow said the exercise updates land classifications to reflect Penang’s rapid urbanisation, noting that areas like Bayan Baru, Bukit Jambul, Seberang Jaya and Bandar Cassia remain classed as village land since 1966 despite their urban character. He added that the amendments will improve administrative efficiency, boost revenue collection, and create a fairer taxation system, as the last gazetting exercise was carried out nearly 60 years ago.
Move aligns land status with Penang’s urban growth and aims to improve tax fairness.
