SINGAPORE: A 23-year-old woman was sentenced to 11 months’ jail on Sept 15 for cheating a man she met via the controversial sugar dating platform Sugarbook. Chang Wai Chain had agreed to meet him for sex in exchange for S$400 but later extorted S$8,100 by falsely claiming she was underage. Earlier this month, another woman, Claris Ling Min Rui, 20, admitted to making a false rape report after a payment dispute with a man she met on the same platform.
Sugar dating legal for consenting adults despite Sugarbook scandals
The cases have reignited scrutiny of the dating app, which promotes “mutually beneficial” relationships between sugar daddies and sugar babies. Lawyers note that such arrangements are legal between consenting adults but become criminal when minors, fraud, extortion or exploitation are involved.
