KUALA LUMPUR: A veiled jab by PAS election director Sanusi Nor at Bersatu’s finances has reignited old tensions, drawing attacks from Umno over the Islamist party’s past dealings. Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said claims that Bersatu bankrolled Perikatan Nasional’s GE15 campaign, including PAS candidates, confirmed long-circulated rumours that led to the collapse of the Muafakat Nasional pact.

Umno’s Puad Zarkashi accused PAS of ingratitude and questioned whether it had ever scrutinised Bersatu’s funding sources, hinting at possible links to corruption. The MACC froze Bersatu’s accounts in early 2023 under anti-money laundering laws. The row comes as PAS and Bersatu separately endorsed Muhyiddin Yassin as PN’s prime ministerial candidate ahead of GE16, despite growing cracks within the coalition.
