KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed Urban Renewal Bill (URA) has sparked open conflict within the Madani government, pitting Umno’s Titiwangsa MP Johari Abdul Ghani against coalition partners Amanah and DAP. Johari, who also serves as Federal Territories Minister, warned that rushing the URA could replicate the controversial Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment, where homeowners risk being treated like squatters. He called for the Land Acquisition Act to be kept separate from urban renewal to prevent abuse.
URA bill debate ignites rift between Johari and Khalid as Johari warns gov’t over land rights
Former FT minister and Amanah leader Khalid Samad hit back, accusing Johari of misrepresenting his stance and demanding a retraction, even threatening legal action. Meanwhile, the bill’s main proponent, Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming of DAP, faces growing scrutiny. The clash exposes fractures in the unity government as it navigates contentious redevelopment policies.
