GEORGE TOWN: Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has come under scrutiny after posting about his meal at the popular Penang Road Famous Laksa. Some Malay netizens criticised him for patronising a Chinese-owned eatery and questioned its halal status. Zafrul later shared a photo of the restaurant’s halal certificate, saying diners rarely double-check validity online. However, the certificate was retracted in June.

The restaurant’s owner, Leow Woo Taid, clarified that Zafrul visited in May when certification was valid, though no record confirms this. Leow said the certificate was rescinded due to an expansion, not food issues, and stressed the outlet removed the logo after it was withdrawn. Authorities warn fraudulent use of expired halal logos is an offence.
