KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — Bersatu supreme council member Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has submitted a motion urging the Dewan Rakyat to recognise Malay villages, including Kampung Baru, as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. He said Malay villages embody culture, traditions, architecture, and social systems, making them vital to the survival of Malays and Malaysia’s identity.
UNESCO heritage for Kampung Baru
The motion calls on the government, through the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, National Heritage Department, and state authorities, to initiate an official UNESCO application. Wan Fayhsal argued recognition would protect traditional settlements from eviction, exploitation, and redevelopment pressures, citing Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s recent concerns over land issues in Kampung Sungai Baru. UNESCO recognition, he added, would provide international validation and safeguard cultural heritage.
