Britain, Australia, Canada and Portugal have formally recognised the State of Palestine, marking a historic change in decades of Western foreign policy. The announcement, welcomed by Palestinians in Gaza as a “moral victory,” sparked outrage from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who vowed that a Palestinian state would “never come to pass.”

Netanyahu denounced the recognition as “absurd,” warning it endangered Israel’s existence, and pledged to expand Jewish settlements in the West Bank. The recognition, coming ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York, places the UK and Canada as the first G7 members to take the step. Leaders from Australia and Portugal stressed that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace.
