DAP veteran and Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng has strongly criticised Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat’s proposal to amend laws so that underage girls who consent to sex are also punished. Lim described the idea as “ethically wrong” and a betrayal of a police officer’s duty to protect women, children, and vulnerable groups.

“How can this be achieved when the victim is also penalised together with the culprit?” he asked, calling the proposal misguided and lacking empathy. He emphasised Malaysia’s age of consent laws are designed to protect minors from sexual exploitation, not criminalise them. Lim urged Yusoff to withdraw the proposal, apologise, and instead focus on curbing rising cases of sexual crimes in Kelantan.
