SHAH ALAM, Sept 23 — Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has cautioned that having more than one “big umbrella” coalition among Malay parties will only lead to division and electoral defeat.
He noted that while the proposal for a united Malay “umbrella” has received encouraging support, the desire of different leaders to become Prime Minister could result in two, three, or more umbrellas being formed.

Dr Mahathir stressed that Malays joining multiple umbrellas would mirror existing party membership splits, worsening fragmentation. He urged reflection on whether unity or division is the goal.
He added that Malay voters have sufficient constituencies to secure power, but should pursue coalition governments inclusive of Chinese, Indian, and other communities.
