BENGALURU: Indian students and US tech companies were left reeling after Washington’s abrupt announcement of a US$100,000 (RM421,000) fee for H-1B skilled worker visas. The move, detailed by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick alongside President Donald Trump, initially suggested an annual charge before later clarifications called it a one-off.

The uncertainty has rattled students like 21-year-old aerospace engineering student Sudhanva Kashyap, who had hoped to study in the US and secure work through the visa route. H-1B visas, which allow foreign professionals to work in the US, are capped at 85,000 annually, with Indians comprising most recipients.
