KOTA BHARU: A car smuggling syndicate from Singapore lured buyers with discounts of 30 to 40 percent, said Kelantan Customs director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long. Investigations revealed the vehicles were stored around Johor Bahru before being distributed nationwide. In May, nine luxury vehicles worth RM1.46 million, including BMW, Porsche, Audi, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Suzuki Swift models, were seized following public tip-offs.

The cars, priced as low as RM25,000, are classified as prohibited imports under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023. Offenders face fines up to 20 times the vehicle’s value or RM500,000, and possible jail terms. Separately, Wan Jamal said RM21.3 million worth of drugs were seized between January and August, mostly smuggled through Malaysia-Thailand river routes.
