ROME/NEW YORK, Sept 25 — Spain and Italy have sent naval vessels into the Mediterranean to protect the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which is delivering aid to Gaza. Italy confirmed on Thursday it had already dispatched a frigate and would send another ship, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told parliament.

Spain announced its navy would also join the mission, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stressing that international law must be respected. The move follows drone attacks on the flotilla in international waters, with activists reporting low-flying drones dropping flashbangs and unidentified objects. Organisers called it “a dangerous escalation” targeting citizens from 45 nations. Spain will dispatch a ship from Cartagena equipped for rescue and protection if required.
