Recently, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that social media platforms are currently encouraged to ask for their user’s identification to verify if it’s truly them or not. This is being justified in lieu of the massive scams that are happening, along with minors below 13-years-old making social media profiles.

However, it seems that netizens aren’t really keen on having their full identity be given to social media platforms. They state that rather than using scams as a justification for this, why not track the companies or organisations that allegedly leaked our phone numbers to telemarketers and scammers.
Others feel that this is more of an invasion of their privacy rather than an approach to protect them. Regardless there are those who believe that regulation is needed for these platforms, and having verification of each user may help reduce crime online.
