At 17, Wang Shangkun sold his kidney to buy an iPhone 4 and iPad 2, believing it would elevate his social status. Growing up poor in Anhui, China, he was lured by online posts and traffickers who paid him 20,000 yuan for the illegal surgery. 

Sold Kidney for iPhone, Now Disabled

The joy was short-lived—his remaining kidney failed due to infection, and he was later declared permanently disabled. Now 31, Wang regrets the decision that cost him his health. 

Though he received compensation years later, he lives with only 25% kidney function, dependent on dialysis and unable to work. His mother described the moment she learned the truth as “the sky collapsing.”
