KUALA LUMPUR: More Malaysians are being diagnosed with lupus, or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), not due to rising prevalence but improved detection, according to Malaysia SLE Association president Prof Dr Syahrul Sazliyana Shaharir. She said doctors are now more aware of lupus’ diverse symptoms, though public awareness lags behind diseases like cancer.

Patients, however, continue to face significant hurdles, including costly treatments, occasional drug shortages, limited access to specialists, and workplace discrimination. Association executive secretary Illani Azalia Zainal Abidin highlighted the emotional and financial struggles of living with lupus, stressing the importance of therapy and support networks. She urged employers to adopt flexible policies, noting that patients can still live full, productive lives despite chronic illness.
