Thousands of young demonstrators in Madagascar are demanding President Andry Rajoelina step down, rallying behind a pirate flag from the anime One Piece as a symbol of defiance. The protests, fuelled by daily power and water cuts lasting up to 12 hours, have already forced a government reshuffle but protesters say cosmetic changes are insufficient.

At least 22 people have been killed since unrest began last week, with the UN condemning the authorities’ violent response. Protesters argue that systemic corruption and powerful lobbyists keep the country trapped in misrule, insisting that “the system must fall.” Inspired by Nepal’s recent uprising, youth activists vow to continue until genuine change replaces Rajoelina’s leadership.
