A section of the M5 in Devon has been closed southbound after a car transporter carrying multiple electric vehicles caught fire. The incident occurred between Junction 28 in Cullompton and Junction 29 in Exeter, forcing diversions and long delays. Devon and Cornwall Fire and Rescue crews quickly extinguished the blaze, while police, emergency services, and National Highways traffic officers attended the scene.

Although the fire is under control, National Highways confirmed that lane one will remain shut for emergency resurfacing once debris is cleared. Authorities have urged motorists to plan ahead, use diversion routes, and expect disruption. The northbound carriageway has since reopened, but the southbound stretch remains shut with no estimate given for reopening.
Devon and Cornwall Police warned of “significant traffic issues” and asked drivers to avoid the area while emergency services continue their work.
