A Thai court sentenced former marine Ekkalak Paenoi, 41, to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of Cambodian opposition lawmaker Lim Kimya, 74, shot dead in Bangkok on January 7. Initially facing a death penalty, Ekkalak’s confession led to a commuted sentence. He was also convicted for illegal firearm use and ordered to pay 1.79 million baht ($55,162) to Lim’s family. A second defendant was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
