KUALA LUMPUR – An environmental NGO has accused Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) of engaging a company to unlawfully kill stray dogs. The Organisation for the Preservation of National Heritage Malaysia (Peka) claimed UPM paid a Sentul-based firm RM400 per dog, with at least 15 allegedly shot dead.

Peka president Rajesh Nagarajan said photographic evidence supports the allegations and stressed the act contravenes the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which prohibits causing unnecessary animal suffering or killing by firearms without authorisation. He added that the shootings may also breach firearms legislation. A purported invoice dated November 2024 showed UPM’s stamp and listed “catching and disposal of stray dogs.” UPM has yet to respond to the allegations.
