KUALA LUMPUR – Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to avoid statements that could weaken the government’s anti-corruption message, citing Anwar’s recent remark that “even Pharaoh had a legacy.”
Rafizi said the intention may have been to emphasise equality before the law, but such comments could be read as granting leeway to political allies or business elites.
Pharaoh oh Pharaoh
He stressed that decisions must remain rule-based, warning that inconsistent messaging would erode public trust.
He also called for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to function independently, arguing that only impartial enforcement can safeguard credibility.
“Without consistency, the fight against corruption risks losing its credibility,” Rafizi said.
