Stateless Sabah Youth Now Slam ‘Unfair’ Citizenship for Suspended Footballers

1 min read

SEMPORNA – Stateless Sabahans have voiced frustration over what they see as double standards in the recent football citizenship controversy. Fandi Nukizan, 22, also known as Ijan from the Bajau Laut community, said it was unjust that foreign players could obtain Malaysian citizenship easily while locals born and raised in the country still face rejection.

His family has applied for citizenship for over a decade without success. The issue gained attention after Fifa sanctioned the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven players for falsifying documents to secure eligibility, imposing fines and 12-month bans. While FAM vowed to appeal, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution defended the naturalisation process. Statelessness remains widespread in Sabah, particularly among Bajau Laut families.
