A tragic helicopter crash at Bankstown Airport on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a 50-year-old flight instructor and left his 19-year-old trainee critically injured. Dashcam footage captured the Robinson R22 helicopter clipping a power pole before ripping through trees and crash-landing onto a parked car in the airport’s Birch Street car park around 1.30pm.

The instructor died at the scene, while the trainee was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in serious condition. Witnesses described hearing a loud bang as panic spread through nearby businesses. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has established a crime scene and will conduct a full investigation, including wreckage examination and component recovery. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
