Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, a Muslim who mentored Anwar Ibrahim, then saw his deputy jailed in a homosexual scandal. On his 18th anniversary as prime minister of Malaysia, he spoke to NEWSWEEK’s Ron Moreau and Tony Emerson and we bring you a very exclusive excerpt of this famous interview from 1999.

Asked on how he responds to people from the opposition calling him a pharaoh for building a palace in Putrajaya, quote: “They can call me a pharaoh if they like. It’s not for me. I won’t be around much longer. It’s the residence of the prime minister, not Dr. Mahathir the pharaoh.” Epic right. Pharaoh Mahathir might be gone from office, but, others have replaced him in the ‘palace’.
