Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, a Muslim who mentored Anwar Ibrahim, then saw his deputy jailed in a homosexual scandal. On his 18th anniversary as prime minister of Malaysia, he spoke to NEWSWEEK’s Ron Moreau and Tony Emerson and we bring you a very exclusive excerpt of this famous interview from 1999.

Pharaoh or Mahafiraun?

Asked on how he responds to people from the opposition calling him a pharaoh for building a palace in Putrajaya, quote: “They can call me a pharaoh if they like. It’s not for me. I won’t be around much longer. It’s the residence of the prime minister, not Dr. Mahathir the pharaoh.” Epic right. Lately, Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister now, said even the pharaoh has legacy — and some joked he probably meant Wi-Fi signal, marble floors, and eternal renovation works. Pharaoh Mahathir might be gone from office, but, others have replaced him in the ‘palace’.
