Starting March 1, 2026, visitors to Kyoto will face a sharp hike in accommodation taxes — up to 10,000 yen (S$86) per guest per night, a 900% jump from current rates. The increase, Japan’s highest, targets high-end stays costing 100,000 yen and above, while budget travellers will see smaller hikes. Kyoto officials say the move aims to manage overtourism and fund improvements to public infrastructure.
Hotel Tax
Tourists may feel the pinch, especially as lodging costs rise across Japan’s peak travel seasons. Travel analysts predict that some visitors may shorten stays or opt for cheaper accommodations. However, local authorities insist the higher levy will help preserve Kyoto’s heritage and reduce strain on crowded streets and attractions.
