New: Singapore Man Pays “Apology Fee” to Lover in Elaborate Online Romance Scam

A 68-year-old Singaporean salesman lost more than S$10,000 in an online romance scam after paying an “apology fee” to a woman he believed was his lover. The victim, Mr. Ng, met the scammer — who called herself “Li Xin” — on Facebook in August 2025.

She later claimed she was detained at Singapore customs and needed money to resolve the issue. To “apologize” for the inconvenience caused by her alleged troubles, Ng sent another S$1,000 as an “apology fee.” Li Xin later claimed to have been in a car accident, continuing to extract payments until Ng realised he had been deceived. Police are investigating the case.
