Prof James Chin: If Alcohol Is Banned, Beef Should Be Too

Political commentator Prof James Chin has criticised the government’s stance on alcohol at official events, calling it “hypocritical and inconsistent.” Responding to the reprimand of Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing over alcohol served at a Tourism Malaysia dinner, Chin argued that if religious sensitivities justify such bans, then beef should also be excluded from government events out of respect for Malaysia’s Hindu community.

Beef ban?

He warned that the issue reflects political power play by supremacist groups imposing Islamic norms on non-Muslims. Chin said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim erred by reprimanding Tiong, describing it as pandering to conservative forces.

“So if they claim to be sensitive to everyone, then it’s only appropriate that beef shouldn’t be served at government events given a substantial number of up to 7% Malaysians profess the Hindu faith.” – His comments published by Focus Malaysia.
