Lawyer and rights activist Siti Kasim has criticised what she calls political hypocrisy over the recent uproar about alcohol served at a tourism event involving Tourism Minister Tiong King Sing. In a video posted online, Siti said the outrage was misplaced since the alcohol was paid for by private sponsors, not taxpayers. “Then we look at Anwar Ibrahim, stern warning. What warning? You know, there is no law to actually stop the non-Muslims from drinking in any event or whatever because they are free to do what they want,” she said.
“You know, from what I see, Tiong is the only daring person who go against the norms. And this is what they don’t like,” she added. She also said she do not drink alcohol.
Hypocrisy and alcohol debate
Siti argued that Malaysians should “mind their own business,” stressing that personal choices should not be dictated by religious sentiment. She questioned why leaders apologise for trivial issues like being sprayed with champagne while serious crimes such as corruption and sexual abuse by religious figures draw little outrage.
