Kelantan Police Crack Down on Unregistered Religious Schools After Abuse Case

Kelantan police have intensified monitoring of unregistered religious institutions to prevent their misuse for deviant teachings or criminal acts. Police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the focus is on pondok and tahfiz centres not registered with the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK).

This follows a case involving madrasah principal Muhammad Aswadi Yah, known as Abuya, who faces seven sexual assault charges involving minors. Police and MAIK are coordinating to ensure compliance and prevent further abuse. Authorities stress that all religious institutions must operate within legal frameworks to safeguard public harmony and protect vulnerable students.
